Dignity is at the heart of our care

During the last few days, Group Trainer, Sarah, has been delivering her ‘Dignity in Care’ course throughout the Group. Sarah has been on the road to our Dane View Care Home with Nursing in Leicester, at the Alexandra in Poulton-le-Fylde, and at Park View in Blackpool.

Group Managing Director, Amar Singh is a great believer in the concept of treating people with dignity. He says, ‘Treating our elders with respect is ingrained in my life. My dad used to bring me and my siblings in with him to work at the Alexandra. We did everything – care work, cleaning rooms, assisting in the kitchen, and doing the laundry. It worked well because my school and then university holidays meant I could cover shifts when most people wanted time off, like at Christmas and during the summer. I quickly learned that not everyone is fortunate enough to cope by themselves, so it’s very important to me that our residents are treated with dignity – particularly vulnerable residents who cannot articulate their needs very well. That is why Sarah’s training course is vital to reinforce the company’s ethos that we are visitors in our residents’ homes. We are privileged to be entrusted with their care!’

Sarah has many different courses that her team delivers with help from senior staff within the homes. The Dignity course, she says, is one of her favourites. ‘Understanding what impacts the potential loss of dignity helps us control the environment around us and our own behaviours, so that we deliver a thoughtful and compassionate caring service,’ Sarah says.

As the pictures show, the courses are always lively and interactive, meaning that staff take lots of positives away from their training and can recall information more readily to improve their standard of care.
