Kier building links at the Alexandra

Residents and visitors to the Alexandra Care Home (and our Facebook page) in recent weeks have been used to seeing Kier Construction’s Community Liaison Officer, Luke. Luke is a very talented guitarist and singer – he has been coming into the home to entertain the residents.

Last Wednesday Luke’s visit to the Alexandra Care Home with Nursing was accompanied by a production company and his colleagues, who filmed him in action. In stark contrast to the wind and rain outside, Luke warmed the home, playing a medley of popular tunes. Luke took requests from Alexandra staff and residents as the film crew worked around him, capturing the action on camera to add to a promotional piece being made about Kier Transportation.

Kier’s marketing consultant, Natalie, says, ‘We have an exhibition stand at a forthcoming Expo at the NEC. The footage will be part of a montage showcasing community initiatives where we are working. Luke is a great ambassador for the company, giving something back in areas our work may cause some disruption.’

Luke’s remit, as Community Liaison Officer, is to meet residents, businesses and groups affected by Kier projects. While highway projects cannot take place without there being an element of inconvenience, it is a fantastic initiative on the part of Kier to allow Luke to not just discuss projects to help mitigate disruption, but to utilise his talents to help build understanding locally. Luke is now involved with a local school in a ‘mobility pathway’ project and, as we have seen, is extending that inclusivity to the elderly by coming into the Alexandra to sing to residents.

Anyone who witnesses Luke in action will see how much the residents love his singing and the joy listening to him brings. Luke’s passion is Irish folk music, but he has a wide repertoire of songs, including jazz, country and northern soul. Luke plays both solo and in bands all over the northwest of England.

Luke says, ‘It is wonderful to be able to link my passion for music with Kier’s commitment to social values – singing while working is definitely my dream job!’
